MOVIE REVIEW: OCEAN’S 8

Since we love heist movies....
Upon her release from solitary confinement after five years behind bars, Debbie, played by Sandra Bullock, the estranged sister of conman Danny Ocean, is back at it starting a new life of crime the moment she exits prison. With a glitter-filled plan to hatch, she puts together a team of beautiful thieves to pull off the heist of the century. Her goal is to rob New York City's mega annual event - the star-studded fundraising costume Met Gala. The target - a six-pound necklace worth more than $150 million dollars. This Warner Bros film feels fluff-like but because of the list of star power and their on-screen chemistry - you stay tuned.
Directed and co-written by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Hunger Games) Bullock stars along with Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Awkwafina and Helena Bonham Carter. There isn't much to report with this one, as it feels like the last one 10 years ago Ocean's 13. An endless plot twisting melange outlines every detail of the heist making it feel tedious in the second half, making it tough to stay interested. The stars do a good job together though that it's worth it to keep following. (Anne Hathaway steals the show as a model.) The plot has Bullock's character immediately calling her old partner in crime played by Blanchett to get the ball rolling. Rihanna is the computer hack and Helena Bonham Carter is the aging fashion designer. Guest appearances include Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Katie Homes, Marlo Thomas, Serena Williams, Heidi Klum, Elibath Ashley, Dakota Fanning, James Corden and Elliot Gould. Ocean's 8 is very much movie-light with the same Ocean schtick but the ladies pull it off... though you're constantly wishing that Clooney would walk in and make it all just a little bit better. That said, who needs George! Ladies. Job well done.
