The Broadcast Film Critics Association has changed its name to the Critics Choice Association and the Critics Choice Awards take place Jan 12th this year! This is a great awards show. The Critics Choice Association is by far the largest (400+ members) and most significant voting group outside of those for the Oscars and the Emmys. And for the next five weeks, the excitement leading up to our January 12 show a week after the Golden Globes builds. The awards are a day before the Oscar nominations are announced. In other words, in the heart of the movie awards season. The Critics Choice Association is the best indicator of Academy Award wins. There are four big award shows that matter: First is the Critics Choice Association with the Critics Choice Awards each year, then The Hollywood Foreign Press (with less than 100 members) have its Golden Globe Awards, then the Screen Actors Guild Awards are the SAG/AFTRA award show and then finally the Granddaddy of them all - the Oscars - the nickname for the Academy Awards which are put on by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. But truly the lead to Oscars is best predicted by what happens at the Critics Choice awards on Jan 12. That will show you most likely what will happen come Oscar day which is very early this year February 9th.
